Comments: Skip Nault and I fished the Ashtabula River in NE Ohio for about four hours for steelhead on March 26. The river was fishable, but pretty high. Visibility was only 12-14" and water temp was 39F. We were successful in landing six steelhead of 2.5 to 5.5lbs. Several others were lost, including an enormous fish that was never seen, but broke off after I had fought it nearly 5 minutes. Steelhead were caught on both pink egg patterns and "White Death" minnow-imitation streamers. These have a silver mylar tube body and a white rabbit fur strip back. All the Lake Erie tributary streams are now blown out with the rains this week, but when they settle back down, steelhead fishing should be excellent the next several weeks.
Note from Webmaster: See the article written by Randy Rowe on this website regarding water temperature and how this should be taken into account when fishing for steelhead.
